	Sep 23 - HW3 is posted, due 10/8.
	Sep 30 Midterm -1 on Wed 10/1, 7-8:30 pm at Everitt 269. The exam will be closed book, closed notes except for a 1 -one sided sheet of notes.

Grading
There will be seven (+/-1) homework sets worth 20%, two midterm exams (15% each) worth 30% and a final exam worth 50%.

Chapter 2: Entropy, Relative Entropy and Mutual Information.
Chapter 3: The Asymptotic Equipartition Property.
Chapter 4: Entropy Rates of a Stochastic Process.
Chapter 5: Lossless data compression (Huffman, Ziv-Lempel, Arithmetic, Shannon-Fano codes): Kraft inequality, Shannon's source coding theorem.
Chapter 7: Channel capacity: jointly typical sequences, Fano's inequality, Shannon's channel coding theorem and its converse.
Chapter 8: Differential Entropy.
Chapter 9: Gaussian Channels.
Chapter 10: Rate-distortion theory: Shannon's source coding theorem relative to a fidelity criterion.
Other topics as time permits.
